Who needs to take this course?
You need hunter education to purchase an adult hunting license in Maine unless you can show proof of having previously held an adult license to hunt with firearms in any year beginning with 1976.
Bowhunter and crossbow education are available and may be required in certain circumstances.

Registration requirements

Course expiration and extensions
The Maine Hunter-Ed course expires after 90 days.
Extensions are available for the following course option:

Quizzes and final exam
Hunter-Ed: Students must score 70% or higher on quizzes. Students have unlimited quiz attempts.
The final exam includes 50 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Field day requirements
Students under 16 years old must complete a Skills and Exam Day to complete hunter safety certification.
Passing the online course does not guarantee a spot at the Skills and Exam Day.

After completing the course
After passing and paying for the online course, students can immediately print their proof of online completion or request that a PDF be emailed to them.
Students under 16 years old must bring this document with them to their Skills and Exam Day.
Bowhunter and crossbow education
Bowhunter and crossbow education are available in Maine and may be required in certain circumstances.
Military exemptions and benefits
Active-duty military members stationed in Maine and their dependents may purchase a resident hunting license.
Active-duty military members who are Maine residents but stationed elsewhere, and their dependents, may purchase a reduced-fee hunting license.
Resident veterans and non-resident veterans from New Hampshire and Vermont with 50% or more service-connected disability may be eligible for a free hunting license. This license is available only through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife main office in Augusta.
Replacement cards
Hunters age 16 and older can replace a lost or destroyed Hunter Education Firearms Card by logging back into the course and printing a new one.
