Who needs to take this course?
You need hunter education to purchase a Montana hunting license if you were born after January 1, 1985.
You also need education to buy a bow-and-arrow license in Montana.

Montana hunter education courses expire after 90 days.

Quizzes and final exam
Exam requirements may vary by course option.
Hunter-Ed: Quizzes include 5 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited quiz attempts. The final exam includes 80 questions, and students must score 85% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Ilearntohunt: Quizzes include 5 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited quiz attempts. The final exam includes 80 questions, and students must score 85% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Field day requirements
There is no field day requirement for Montana.
Age requirements
Students must be at least 10 years old to register.
Students who are 11 years old can take the course and hunt as an apprentice, but they will not be fully certified until they turn 12 years old.
After completing the course
Adult students can print their permanent certificate after completing the course.
Youth students receive a Field Day voucher.
If a student did not complete the course with us or had a Field Day requirement, they may need to get their card from the state.

Bowhunter education
Bowhunter education is required to buy a bow-and-arrow license in Montana.

Military exemptions and benefits
Active-duty military members who are stationed in Montana for at least 30 days may purchase a resident hunting license.
Active-duty military members who are Montana residents but stationed elsewhere may also purchase a resident hunting license.
Disabled veterans and active-duty military members may be eligible to receive donated hunting licenses. Eligibility may require being a Purple Heart recipient and having 70% or more service-connected disability.
