Who needs to take this course?
You need hunter education to purchase a hunting license in North Dakota if you were born after 1961.
North Dakota does not require bowhunter education. Students may still take a bowhunter education course if they plan on bowhunting in states that require certification.

Registration requirements
Students must enroll in the North Dakota Game and Fish Department Initial Classroom Session before taking the online course.

After enrolling in the Initial Classroom Session, students will receive an email with additional course materials required for the Final Classroom Session.
Passing the online course does not secure enrollment in the Initial Classroom Session.
Course expiration and extensions
Students have 2 weeks to complete the online portion of the course.
Extensions are available for the following course option:
- Hunter-Ed
Quizzes and final exam
Hunter-Ed: Quizzes include 5 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass or they must restudy the unit.
The final exam includes 50 questions. Students must score 90% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Field day requirements
North Dakota requires both an Initial Classroom Session and a Final Classroom Session.
Students must pass the online course and attend the Final Classroom Session to complete hunter education requirements.

After completing the course
Students have 2 weeks to complete the online portion of the class.
After completing the online portion, students must attend the Final Classroom Session.
The hunter education certificate is mailed by the state.
Bowhunter education
North Dakota does not require bowhunter education.

Military exemptions and benefits
Active-duty military members stationed in North Dakota may purchase a resident hunting license.
Active-duty military members who are North Dakota residents but stationed elsewhere may purchase a resident hunting license while on leave.
They may also be eligible to receive a deer gun license outside of the license lottery.
