Hunter education is required for everyone, especially first-time hunters who want to buy a hunting license in North Carolina.
You also need hunter education if you are 16 years old and want to hunt without supervision.

Course expiration and extensions
North Carolina hunter education courses expire after 90 days.
Extensions are available for the following course options:
- Hunter-Ed
- Ilearntohunt
- HunterEdCourse
HunterCourse does not offer extensions.
Quizzes and final exam
Exam requirements may vary by course option.
HunterCourse: Students must score 70% or higher on quizzes. Students have unlimited quiz retries. The final exam includes 50 questions, and students must score 70% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Hunter-Ed: Students must score 70% or higher on quizzes. Students have unlimited quiz retries. The final exam includes 50 questions, and students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Ilearntohunt: Students must score 70% or higher on quizzes. Students have unlimited quiz retries. The final exam includes 50 questions, and students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
HunterEdCourse: Students must score 70% or higher on quizzes. Students have unlimited quiz retries. The final exam includes 50 questions, and students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Field day requirements
There is no Field Day requirement for North Carolina.
After completing the course
After passing and paying for the online course, students can immediately print their Hunter Education Certificate from their account.
For Hunter-Ed and Ilearntohunt courses completed after 2022, students can log in and print their certificate.
For HunterCourse, Hunter-Ed and Ilearntohunt courses completed before 2022, or courses completed with another provider, students may need to contact the state.
Military exemptions and benefits
Active-duty military members who are non-residents may purchase a resident hunting license.
Active-duty military members who are North Carolina residents but stationed elsewhere are not required to have a hunting license while on leave. Their leave must be less than 30 days.
Resident veterans who are 50% or more disabled may be eligible for the Disabled Veteran Sportsman License and the Disabled Veteran Hunting and Inland Fishing License. These are lifetime licenses.
Replacement cards
For Hunter-Ed and Ilearntohunt courses completed after 2022, students can log in and reprint their certificate.
For HunterCourse, Hunter-Ed and Ilearntohunt courses completed before 2022, or courses completed with another provider, students may need to contact the state for replacement card assistance.
